The institute conducts free school camps in the local schools. In the year 2005-06, we conducted free camps in five schools and a total of 48 children were identified to have speech-language hearing problems. Parental counseling was given and they were referred to the institute for follow-up
In 2006-07, camps were conducted in four schools and 15 children were identified. The children were referred to the institute for therapy.
The institute conducts free hearing camps in the institute premises four times in a year. Camps are organized to mark “World Disabled Day” and “World Day for the Deaf”. Free hearing testing and counseling is provided, hearing aids are distributed at concessional rates. Institute also conducts free hearing screening in Orphanages and Old-age Homes .
a) Inauguration
To mark the inauguration of the institute a walkathon was organized by the staff and students of the institute. The Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, Dr. M.S Thimmappa flagged off the walkathon. The walkathon received wide publicity in the press and was covered by all local T.V Channels.
b) The Institute conducted an awareness Program” Catch them Young” with Rotary Club. This program was done to coincide with the Pulse Polio campaign. Parents who visited the Primary Health Centres were given pamphlets on early signs of speech and hearing problems in children. A total of 2000pamphelets were distributed and 12 children were identified and referred to the institute.
c) On International Noise Awareness Day
On 26th April 2006, the institute and Nayak’s Hearing Clinic organized an awareness program on harmful effects of noise. The event received wide publicity. There were many calls from citizens who want to form a group that will work on creating awareness on the harmful effect of noise, the institute will provide all the support required.
d) Painting competition for hearing impaired children. A painting competition was organized for children with hearing impairment at Cubbon Park on 6th Oct 2006. The event was sponsored by the Britannia Industries Pvt. Ltd. and Pedilite Industry. A total of six schools took part in this event.
e) In association with Kathalaya an NGO working at popularizing story telling, the institute organized a story telling session for hearing impaired children in the age group of 6-12 years. The children were taught to make puppets and different maps. The session was sponsored by Rotary Club of R.T Nagar.
f) Career in Speech and Hearing: talks on career prospects in the field of Speech and Hearing were given in local PU College with the aim to increase awareness among the students. Students were given an insight on the job profile of a Speech Language Pathologist and Audiologist and job prospects in India and abroad were also discussed
